National League for Nurses: Nurse Educators Core Competencies
Academic nurse educators are responsible for specific standards of practices. Nurse educators engage in specific roles and functions. These responsibilities reflect the core competencies for nursing faculty.
Competency I: Facilitate Learning
Nurse educators are responsible for facilitating learning and achievement of desired cognitive, effective, and psycho-motor outcomes. To facilitate active learning students need to be exposed to different teaching strategies, cultural diversity, evidence-based practice, and modeled critical and reflective thinking skills (National League for Nursing, 2012 Rev).
In order to achieve this during my clinical rotation, I plan to incorporating different learning styles to reach the majority of students needs. Appealing to different cultures, presenting evidence-based practice, and advocating to increase critical thinking will in turn increase the majority of students knowledge.

Competency II: Facilitate Learner Development and Socialization
The nurse educator is responsible for educating and developing students into nurses. Educators help build students socialization to the nursing field, while promoting critical thinking with diverse teaching styles (National League for Nursing, 2012 Rev).
In order to achieve, I plan on creating an assignment for students to collect admission assessments. First, develop an admission assessment and have students practice with each other. This will help develop social skills and understand the expectations of admission assessments. Next, the students will take these skills to the clinical site. They will have built confidence, knowledge, and skills to collect admission assessments.
During my practicum experience, I instructed a section of material through lecture. Implementing the lecture via flipped classroom and traditional classroom. The flipped classroom experienced the lecture at home, compared to the traditional students experiencing the lecture in the face-to-face classroom setting. To help develop socialization, the students participated in a simulation where they interacted and completed care on a patient with intestinal obstruction.

Competency III: Use Assessment and Evaluation Strategies
Nurse educators are responsible for assessing and evaluating students learning (National League for Nursing, 2012 Rev). Assessment and evaluations happen in the classroom, laboratory and clinical settings. The assessments are based on evidence-based assessment and evaluation practices.
In order to achieve this during my clinical rotation, I plan to explain the expectations, objectives, and outcomes. Identifying what information will be used for clinical grade will be identified to the students. This data will include identifying which evaluation will be summative and formative to help students understand the evaluation process.
To help students advance throughout the program it is equally important to revisit the students "level of abilities and creatively offer more challenging and clinical reasoning opportunities" (Billings & Halstead, 2012).
During my practicum, I developed a test, demographic survey, and qualitative questionnaire. These helped evaluate the course and obtain feedback on what learning style was most effective. Students also completed a survey on how they felt the simulation helped their learning experience on the subject matter.

Competency IV: Participate in Curriculum Design and Evaluation of Program Outcomes
Nurse educators are responsible for designing, and evaluating curriculum. Designing a curriculum that incorporates the organizational mission, contemporary health care trends, and promotes community outreach. The student will be prepared to practice effectively in the health care environment.
I achieved these skills with:

I achieved these skills with:
- Incorporating the schools mission into the curriculum development.
- Developed a unique case study to incorporate critical thinking.
- Acknowledged the need for stroke curriculum with evidence based research.
- Ongoing course evaluation will be completed to ensure validity and effective teaching.
- Committing and partnering with community organizations will ensure board spectrum of learning. students will be more equipped to understand and care for the community around them.
- Faculty involvement and collaboration with external constituents will be necessary to maintain continuity of teaching and learning.
- During evaluation of curriculum changes and adjustments will be made to ensure best practice is taught and learned.
Competency V: Function as a Change Agent and Leader
The nursing instructor needs to be culturally sensitive, provide leadership, professionalism, and change agents.
I achieved this during my capstone by gaining knowledge on the educational institution, promoting innovative practices, and budget concerns. Participated in staff meetings and team meetings.

Competency VI: Pursue Continuous Quality Improvement in the Nurse Educator Role
Demonstrates lifelong learning and professional development opportunities. "Nurse educators recognize that their role is multidimensional and that an ongoing commitment to develop and maintain competence in the role is essential" (National League for Nursing, 2012 Rev, pg. 20).
In order to achieve this during my clinical rotation, I plan to join national organizations. Studying and collecting information from other nurse educators on becoming a Certified Nurse Educator will help advance my career.

Competency VII: Engage in Scholarship
The nurse educator must acknowledge that scholarship is an integral component of the faculty role, and that teaching is a scholarly activity. This can be accomplished with evidence based teaching and evaluation processes (National League for Nursing, 2012 Rev).
I achieved this during my capstone I designed a project/pilot study and incorporated my Master Science Nursing knowledge, evidence-based practice, and research into curriculum development. Continuing education for my states licenses requirement will help keep me up to date and show my students that nursing is a life long learning process and lead by example.

Competency VIII: Function within the Educational Environment
"Nurse educators are knowledgeable about the educational environment within which they practice and recognize how political, institutional, social, and economic forces impact their role" (National League for Nursing, 2012 Rev, pg. 22).
I achieved this during my capstone by participating in team semester meetings and faculty meetings. When students see educators that are actively involved and leading by example, they will see that educational learning involves more than grading papers. Working with the institutions mission and values statement to incorporate change to stay up to date on evidence-based practice.
